Did you say Magazine??

Lately Ive been so busy with school and not to mention not having a computer, that I haven't been able to blog but my computer's fixed and a teen magazine is in the works! My goal is for the magazine to feature teen fashion, events, activists, music, notable people, tips, interviews etc. that caters to what an actual teen wants and not to what an adult thinks a teen wants. I plan to make it a mixture of sporty chic, indie, urban, street style, and high fashion. I know those are broad topics but Im sure ill find a way to balance it all. If you have any thing you want to contribute such as a magazine title, article, or even any ideas feel free to leave a comment or email me at thestylegeek74@gmail.com!

BeautyCon Industry Lounge💄

On Thursday, I went to Beauty Con's industry event! Tons of beauty gurus, fashion bloggers, and celebrities were there such as Christina Milan, itsmyrayeraye, krazyrayray, and Elle & Blair Fowler. Neutrogena, Bare Minerals, Revitalash, Lush, and other businesses had gifting suites. They also were giving away "Destiny Candles" that had different motivatining words on them like "Weight Loss" or "Good Luck" the candles also doubled as body oil. On top of that the swag bag were perfect, they were full of different makeup, cleansers, 5 panel hats, giftcards, and lotions. This definitely was an amazing night I will never forget.

guide to surviving your FIRST year in middle school

Dear New 6th grader,

You survived the grueling years of elementary!! Congrats lol But seriously middle school can be a time where you make new friend that will carry you on to high school or it can be a time when you slack off and it haunts you in later years. What ever the case I'm going to tell you how to make the best of your first year in middle school.

Making Friends: If you want to make new friend the most obvious thing to do is to make conversation. The best way to do this is to talk with the people you sit by in class. If you're the shy type this may be hard but its everybodies first day of middle school so their equally as nervous and eager to make new friends as you. Also join clubs with people that share your interests.

Your First Detention:  You forgot to do last nights homework or you were late 3 times in the last week, your teacher gives you an after school detention and its the end of the world, right?! Well actually no, its not irregular to get a detention I mean after all you are human just don't make it a habit. The first time I got a detention it might have been for an overdue library book or maybe being late for school. How detention is portrayed in movies and tv shows as being in a scary dark room with a mean teacher that makes you scrub the floors and dust the room is a MYTH. Detention is nothing to be afraid of at my school all they make you do is read a book or finish homework. It's not as bad as it seems!

Clothes: Ok so maybe in Elementary school you had every Justice graphic tee and now your ready for a style switch up! My advice to you is wear what you like and just because crop tops and shorts may be in doesnt mean you need to wear it add your own twist to it because it will make you stand out. For fashionable items that dont cost an arm and a leg I recommend GStage, Fashion Q, Forever 21, and small boutiques . But just make sure you don't look the a walking catalogue pull different accessories, textures, and clothing pieces from other stores to make a complete outfit.

Makeup: Also, when you get to middle school you may notice that alot of people are starting to wear makeup. In my opinon, I feel that in 6th grade you don't need to wear a facefull of makeup every single day. Stick to Clear Mascara and Baby Lips for a natural look. Simple is best. If your parents let you, then a small amount of black mascara may be ok. I do understand that you may want to wear makeup for self confidence or maybe you just like how it looks but it's not necessary.

Studying: In middle school you may find yourself doing better or worse than you did in elementary. It may be an eye opener that you really need to learn how to manage studying. I recommend writing down notes as you study, using highlighters for important information, and using the Cornell note taking system. Also use flash cards and separate your binder into separate sections for each subject. An extra bonus is study for your math tests some people may think that there isn't really a way to do that but read through the chapter and do practice question. Also, if your having trouble DONT be afraid to ask the teacher or ask the counselors for tutoring recommendations.

I hope that this gives you an insight into middle school and that it's not as bad as they make it seem on TV. Middle school should be a fun time and even if you don't like your school try and make the most out of it because it goes by really fast. Don't stress out, have fun, and stay on stop of your studies and you should do fine!

Dealing With Basics

How to not let basic people's opinions get in your way.

In almost every movie there are debby downers, party poopers, doubters, naysayers, or as I like to say basics.

Definition of a Basic:

Something or someone that is uninteresting, vapid, or boring
An adjective used to describe any person, place, activity involving obscenely obvious behavior, dress, action.
example: Don't come this party is basic.
(urbandictionary)
My definition ♡: Boring, carbon copies with no interest of accepting change, taking the road less traveled, or opening their minds to something different. This term can be described as people who follow the norm.

As I was saying these basic people will always have something to eyeroll or say about something that is different or not considered "cool", here are tips on how to not give a bother about their simple minded views.

1. Keep Doing Your Thang
Nothing irks a nay-sayer more than someone that will not conform to their basic ways. Matter of fact, don't let them even have the slightest bit of satisfaction... Keep Doing You!  So what if you want to wear polka dots with stripes or you like walking in the rain as long as your being true to yourself, not harming yourself or hurting others, and it comes from a positive place do it!

2. Don't Trip
To be honest if my whole class didn't like a certain outfit I had on, I wouldn't let it get to me because their validation is just not that important to me. (Willow couldn't have said it any better) Don't let people's words get to you the only opinions that really matter are the people that you love and cherish like family and close friends. Also, you never know who may admire you not being afraid to express yourself. Someone may be struggling with self esteem issues or doubting who they are but you loving your uniqueness can be a shining example to embrace their individuality.

3. Find A Positive Role Model
Things like skin color, hair, weight, the way you talk, your interests, and your appearance may be the blunt of jokes now but as you grow older you'll find differences make you memorable and beautiful. People with similar interests can help you feel better about yourself because in some cases it shows you don't have to be traditionally pretty to be considered beautiful. I know everyone says this but its true "What's on the outside is not nearly as important as whats on the inside." I remember their was a quote on Tumblr that went something like this, "Beauty without intelligence and character is like a masterpiece drawn on a napkin."

4. Thank You For Being My Friend
Surround yourself with positive people. Imagine this: You and some friend are at a party then somebody brings up someone else's name then starts backstabbing them. Even more ironic the person that brought the person up is friends with the person they're backstabbing! You engage in the conversation but what makes you think they won't talk about you if you weren't there?

Choose friends that you truly know wouldn't do this. Choose friends that if people were talking about you they would defend you and not just stand by and let it happen. Also, choose friends who don't single you out, ignore you in front of certain people, or try and make you feel different because REALITY CHECK: THAT'S NOT A REAL FRIEND!!

5. Quotes Help Tooooo!

Put Your Records On

Corinne Bailey Rae

forget the haters cause somebody loves ya. ✌

this too shall pass.

you taught me that it was okay to be crazy.

people are just people they shouldn't make you nervous.

success is the best revenge.

But please don’t cry, dry your eyes, never let up Forgive but don’t forget, girl keep your head up

They laugh at us cause were different, we laugh at you because you're all the same.

I hope that from reading this you can learn to love and accept yourself the way you are and not let negativity get to you. (: Sometimes when were mad or sad it can seem like everyone isn't trying to help but truthfully listen to the people you know actually love you because their fully of good intentions and want to see you succeed.

really think about your words before you speak. they can mean different things to different people. †
